Text in report: "K.O. Shrewsbury tips the
victory scales: Shrewsbury won the Knock-Out contest in Edinburgh on
Wednesday. Tonight, the whole country will see the full glory of their
victory when the film is shown on BBC-1.
It was a fantastic win in the second international heat of
It's A Knockout and it put Shrewsbury even nearer to the final of the
competition in Blackpool and the first prize of £4,000 cash. Shrewsbury
beat teams from Belgium, Switzerland, West Germany and Italy to win the
heat and a magnificent silver trophy.
Hopes: But the way to Blackpool is not clear yet.
Under the rules of the competition, it is the national team which puts up
the best performance that goes through to the finals. This ensures that
each country is represented and Shrewsbury can now only wait and hope that
no other British team comes first in a heat and beats its score of 32
points. Shrewsbury's chances of getting to Blackpool are, however, good.
Their victory at Edinburgh was the first by a British team since the
competition began four years ago.
The team looked likely winners from the start of the heat,
shooting into the lead from the first game with a terrific performance on
a human-propelled wooden car. The lead was held right through.
Anxious final: Towards the end, the Italians,
Germans and Swiss fought back strongly and when the last game, a roller
skate relay, began, the whole contest looked wide open. But Shrewsbury
gained fourth place - and victory in the contest.
Team manager, Mr. Stuart Lister, sporting a kilt for the
occasion, and the team administrator Michael Rayward were jubilant.
Final score in the match was Shrewsbury 32 points, Lecco
(Italy), Weiden (West Germany) 30 points each, Lausanne (Switzerland) 29
points, and Ixelles (Belgium) 19 points."
