Salisbury qualified for Jeux Sans Frontičres in Belgium: transmitted on 28th July 1972

Did You Know? At the beginning of the BBC’s transmissions of the Domestic Heats in 1972, the Watford team (who would later compete in Heat 6) was featured on the front cover of Radio Times magazine (13th-19th May 1972) posing in the guise of the new Radio Times Trophy, which was to be presented to the highest scoring winner of the domestic series. Ironically, it was against Watford that Luton scored the highest points in this year’s domestic series to become the trophy’s first winner!

Banbury qualified for Jeux Sans Frontičres in Switzerland: transmitted on 4th August 1972. Congleton also qualified for JSF as the highest-scoring losing team. Their international heat in Great Britain was transmitted on 15th September 1972.

Did You Know? Congleton recruited Olympic medal winners Robbie and Ann Brightwell to lead their team. Ann, who won Gold and Silver medals in the 1964 Tokyo Games (as Ann Packer), was worried that she was expected to win simply because she had achieved a world record time over 800 metres. Ann was canny enough to realise that this did not automatically mean that she would be adept at springing across a series of wobbly platforms carrying a tray of jellies!

Folkestone qualified for Jeux Sans Frontičres in West Germany:
transmitted on 11th August 1972

Did You Know? A fierce gale was blowing during the recording of this heat, which made some of the games difficult and even hazardous. In one game, involving men having to cross a swimming pool jumping on to a series of floating platforms, a member of the Folkestone team cracked his leg badly against one of the platforms. After being rescued by frogmen, he insisted on continuing as he was a Physical Education teacher and his students would never let him live it down if he didn't complete the game!

Luton qualified for Jeux Sans Frontičres in Netherlands: transmitted on 22nd September 1972.
This result secured Luton with the new ‘Radio Times’ Trophy for 1972 for the highest scoring team in the British heats.

Did You Know? This was the first time a heat of It’s a Knockout had been held wholly indoors. It was to be another nine years before this happened again at The Derby Baths in Blackpool in 1981. (See also note on Domestic Heat 3 from Onchan in 1975.)

Did You Also Know? Two members of Luton’s 1972 team, Steve Mitzei and Sharon Gillett participated many years later in It’s a Knockout and Jeux Sans Frontieres. Steve was a member of the 1978 Stevenage and 1979 St. Albans squads, while Sharon competed again for Luton when they again qualified for Jeux Sans Frontieres in 1982.

Did You Know? During rehearsals for this heat, several members of the Franeker team were mysteriously taken ill with stomach problems, and were unable to participate on the night of the actual recording. To assist the team’s coach, members of the Dutch production crew were given permission to participate for the team on the night. That’s more than likely the reason why the team faired badly on the night! Incidentally, the stomach problems were traced back to a local take-away that the team had visited the night previously. Was this a piece of Belgian sabotage or skullduggery?

Did You Know? In Game 3, ‘The Giant Wrestlers’, team members had to negotiate a small gateway dressed in giant wrestling costumes which weighed about 90lbs each! As this was an elimination race, it had an unusual twist. In all other elimination games, the winner was decided by the ‘last team standing’, but in this game it was the complete opposite, with the winner being decided first and so on!

Did You Also Know? This was the only time that a West German heat had not been held on the mainland. In fact, it was held on the island of Sylt, in the very north-west of the country, close to the Danish border.

Did You Know? This heat was held in one of the smallest sites ever in Jeux Sans Frontičres. The majority of the games were played in the Port Lympia harbour and the others on the narrow Quai Lunel. The programme opened with a carnival float which had an enormous lifelike dragon atop it bellowing smoke from its nostrils.

Did You Also Know? With the theme being ‘International Carnival’, each of the first seven games was dedicated to one of the seven competing countries. At the start of each game a giant carnival float was towed onto the quayside (which already had a very limited space) depicting something about each particular country. In order of presentation, the floats were: Belgium - bicycles with a giant effigy of Edouard ‘Eddy’ Merckx; Netherlands - giant windmills; Great Britain - a sailing ship; Italy - a gondola complete with gondoliers; West Germany - a Baroque castle; France - huge cooking pots with chickens in tow; and Switzerland - giant effigies of Swiss bankers.

Did You Also Know? Despite only scoring 6pts on their Joker game, the Lincoln team from Great Britain had a good night, finishing in 4th position just 3pts behind the winning teams. Game 2 (dedicated to the Dutch) - ‘Windmills and Cheeses’ - involved a giant windmill which was located on the quayside overhanging the water, with its sails set in the classic ‘X’ position, The idea of the game was that one-by-one, each team member (three boys and one girl) would climb a ladder and release an Edam cheese down inside the hollow sail beam of the windmill, which ran from top right to bottom left. Once released, the team member had to then slide down the ladder and make their way to the bottom of the sail by means of a greasy platform which was angled into the water, and then grab the cheese as it came out. The West Germans went first and were unable to judge any of the cheeses’ exits and scored nothing. The Dutch, the Belgians and the Swiss failed likewise, all scoring zero. It looked like the game was going to end in a six-way tie, but the British, having witnessed the failure of the other teams, used their heads and decided that instead of standing on the greasy platform and waiting for the cheese to exit the sail, they would sit down on the platform and slide down at a slower rate towards the edge. This proved to be the secret of the game and they managed to catch one cheese which put them in first place on the game. Last to go were the home team of Nice. They copied the British tactics but couldn't make them work, and they too scored nothing. It all now depended on how they were going to judge the game, and Gennaro Olivieri quite rightly stated that this was a first for Jeux Sans Frontičres as he awarded Great Britain 6pts and all the other five teams 1pt each.

Did You Also Know? West German team Rodenkirchen and Italian team Cittŕ di Castello both ruined their chances of winning the competition outright. With the Italians lying in last place on the Fil Rouge, the West German team lost 7 valuable seconds on the Fil Rouge when the trapeze artist tried to be clever and jump into the rubber dinghy which had come to ‘save him’, instead of lowering into it sedately. This resulted in the dinghy overturning along with his ‘rescuer’ who had come to save him. (This would have given the team an extra 2pts from the Fil Rouge). Nevertheless, going into the last game the Italian team was 5pts clear of West Germany and it looked as if it was going to be a clear Italian victory. However, with Italy finishing in 6th place on the game and West Germany finishing in equal first place with the Swiss, the contest ended in a draw. Incidentally, the Fil Rouge was won by Great Britain team Lincoln, its second victory of the night.

Did You Also Know? Italian signorina Maria Luisa Balzelli, a member of the Cittŕ di Castello team, also participated as a member of the Riccione team in 1975.

Did You Know? British team Luton got off to a good start in this heat and by Game 4 were leading by two points. Despite the fact that the team missed Game 5, the other teams failed to make ground on Luton, who were still leading by 1 point over France, Italy and the Netherlands. By Game 7, Luton, French team Saintes and Belgian team Leuven were in a three way tie for 1st place. The Fil Rouge result really proved vital for the Netherlands and Italy. Whilst Belgium, France and Great Britain struggled to get no more than 4 points in the Fil Rouge, Dutch team Bladel and Italian team Sermoneta scored 7 pts and 6 pts respectively which resulted in Luton and Leuven leading France, Italy and the Netherlands by just 3 points going into the final game. Luton won the last game whilst the Netherlands came in 2nd and Belgium 3rd.

Did You Also Know? Even though Luton's win did not qualify them for the International Final, it did not dampen the team’s post-event celebrations, which ended with the whole Luton team invading Stuart Hall's hotel in Delft, and dragging him down to the fountain outside, into which they good-naturedly threw him!

Did You Also Know? Host town Delft was beaten by Bladel in the Dutch domestic series, Zeskamp and failed to earn the right to participate in its own home JSF heat!

Did You Know? Switzerland won three of the first six games (one of which was their Joker game), and it seemed that a whitewash victory was on the cards. But they missed Game 7, and finished last in the Fil Rouge, allowing the other contenders to gain ground. The Italian team actually went into the final game one point ahead of the Swiss, but another victory for the Swiss team proved decisive and the trophy went to the team from La Chaux-de-Fonds.

Did You Also Know? As in 1969 where there had also been a tied position in the top three places, it was decided that the bronze trophy this year would be awarded to the 4th placed team, Salisbury from Great Britain.
