A new decade and Jeux Sans Frontičres builds on the success of the first two 'revival' series, by expanding to six teams. Sadly, this series was the first ever JSF competition not to feature the Belgians, who were in there at the very beginnings of the series in 1965. They did not return in any subsequent JSF series. On the plus side, Spain made a comeback after their year's sabbatical and Yugoslavia returned also. They had previously been JSF competitors between 1978 and 1982. The year ended with a spectacular one-off winter event in Macao, a Portuguese territory in Asia.

The number of games played in each heat changed again this year, reduced from twelve games to ten. For the first time in the main International series (excluding the 1965 and 1966 contests), all teams participated in every game.

Did You Know? A sumptuously staged competition in a 40,000m˛ open space. All props and equipment were made from wood and bamboo. The Italian and Yugoslav teams ended up sharing the spoils.
