A year of mixed fortunes for Welsh teams - a win in Cwm Mawr, but a last place for at home for Swansea. All of these programmes and those from the 1993 series were later repackaged for The Family Channel, a satellite and cable station, with newly-recorded commentaries by It's A Knockout frontman, Stuart Hall.

The revived Jeux Sans Frontières is now really back up to speed, with eight countries taking part. San Marino drop out of this year's competition, but there are three new entrants - Czechoslovakia, Tunisia and Jeux Sans Frontières veteran, Switzerland. Also, in a new departure for the series, a special winter series was held, and it was in this series that Czechoslovakia and Switzerland made their Nineties debuts.

Did You Know? Qualifying for the Winter International Final involved the most complicated scoring system ever in the history of Jeux Sans Frontières. Each country had two teams each that participated in every game. However, only four points were awarded in each game (4, 3, 2, 1), and only the highest finishing team from each country scored the points, e.g. if Italy finished 1st and 4th on a game, only the highest placed of the teams got the four points for the country. This also gave that team one placing score for qualifying for the final. At the end of the nine games, the team from each country with the highest number of game placings, qualified for the Final. All points scored for the country were also totalled and gave the overall winning country of the Semi-Final. Only one team from each country qualifies for the final.

Did You Know? Portuguese team Olhão was disqualified on Game 2 due to a team member breaking the rules and wearing footwear (this was a repeat of an incident from 1978 at Verbania, Italy), but on this occasion was awarded 0 points. It was the first time in 23 years that a team participating in a game was penalised and received no score on a game. This resulted in the Italian team of Breuil-Cervinia getting equal 1st place in the heat and qualifying for the International Final. Had the referees awarded Portugal the minimum 1 point, then Italian team Castelfidardo would have qualified with a better scoring 2nd placing.
