The last year for Wales in Jeux Sans Frontičres was also their best. Two wins - for Swansea and Wrexham, with the latter qualifying for the final and finishing in a highly creditable second place. This series was the biggest yet for JSF - with the arrival of Malta and Slovenia bringing the number of competing nations up to nine.

For the second year in succession, the number of games per heat changed - this time it increased from eight back up to ten. The election game is re-introduced for another year, and for the very first time in the programme's history, the highest achievable points score hits three figures - 108.

Croeso y Cymru: In the S4C transmission, Llanfairpwll... were captioned as Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch (C).

Did You Know? Throughout Europe, the ‘GB’ team was simply shown as Llanfairpwll..., but when broadcast on S4C as ‘C’, the team’s full name of
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
appeared on the scoreboard throughout. It is the longest team name ever to appear in the programme - a staggering 58 letters!!! It even had to be written, hyphenated, on two lines on the scoreboard but in a smaller font to the rest of the teams. The town's name translates into English as "the church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave". Positively poetic!

It is perhaps lucky however, that Thailand has never participated in Jeux Sans Frontičres, as there may well have been even bigger problems with a team entering from
Krungthepmahanakornamornratanakosinmahintarayutthayamahadilokphop-nopparatrajathaniburiromudomrajaniwesmahasatharnamornphimarnavatarn-sathitsakkattiyavisanukamprasit, who weigh in at an astounding 163 letters!

Did You Also Know? Out of a possible thirty-six points available (without Joker), the Slovenian team of Nova Gorica scored an incredible thirty-five points on the final three games. This feat lifted them from 4th place to 2nd place overall at the finish.

Croeso y Cymru: In the S4C transmission, Wrexham were captioned as Wrecsam (C).

Did You Know? Greek team Poros set a unique record this year, not only do they become the 5th team to qualify for consecutive International Finals, but also qualify for those finals with a 4th placing both times.

Did You Also Know? This International Final had one of the best finishes ever in the programme’s history. Welsh team Wrexham were leading Czech Republic team Česká Třebová by one point after Game 9. The final game involved a team member dressed in a bi-plane costume circumnavigating the entire area of the Cardiff Castle arena. However, the Czechs outran the Welsh team by just four seconds, and won the International Final by a single point. This was a fantastic way for Wales to sign off as it said goodbye to Gęmau Heb Ffiniau, better known as Jeux Sans Frontičres.

Did You Also Know? A new record was set this year as Maltese team Valletta qualified for the International Final with an 8th placing. This is not surprising, as of the ten teams participating for Malta this year, six of them were placed 8th and the other four were placed 9th. This proved to be the worst record in Jeux Sans Frontičres for any country, ever!

Croeso y Cymru: In the S4C transmission, Cardiff were captioned as Caerdydd (C).

Did You Know? This special, recorded in Cardiff four days after the International Final was held there, was billed as a 25th Anniversary celebration. It was actually a celebration of twenty-five series of Jeux Sans Frontičres, the series being 29 years old at this point! In an unusual departure for the series, the games were played solely for fun, and not for points. All teams therefore, finished in first place!

Did You Know? Interestingly, although this was not a competitive contest, it emerged as one of the best festive contests in the show’s history. It was incredibly hilarious to watch, despite not having an English commentary. In fact, the show worked better without the competitiveness to win. The teams integrated together and when things went wrong everybody seemed to join in the fun. The true spirit of Knockout was really on show in Cardiff. It was also one of the few ‘true’ Christmas heats not to be held on ice, and had fake snow!
